This is a wonderful breakdown of camp in the movies. 10/10, no notes.

A Beautiful, Terrible Thing: Mad God review
When I first saw that Shudder was getting the streaming rights to Mad God, I was very excited. It was one of those movie stories that appealed to me: 30 years to make, iconic filmmaker, abandoned and picked up again a decade later… There is, of course a danger in setting up this sort of…Read more
Watch “The image you can’t submit to journals anymore” on YouTube
This is a fascinating look at something I have never heard of before. Check it out! One thing I really appreciate about this little documentary is the effort to actually reach out and have people participate, giving their opinion with their faces on screen. It is a little thing, but it makes a big difference.
This book is a collection if essays take a very deep critical look at science fiction cinema.
There are very interesting perspectives that I never considered before, and I may be doing a deep dive into some of these topics after I finish the book.
It already has me looking at the different genre defining aspects of sci-fi in a new way.
Since this book was published in 1990, though, it is a very interesting exercise to be able to apply these different theoretical ideas to more recent films, from something that is purely spectical like Avatar or smaller indie films like The Endless or Everything, Everywhere, All at Once.
I think this was a good buy, and it’s definitely will be sparking some interesting ideas I’d like to talk about in the future.
I don’t understand why people didn’t like The Batman
So I finally got around to watching The Batman. I liked it way more than I expected it. I love that this dark and gritty “realism” that the DCEU has for some reason hitched its wagon too is being finally translated through an actual comic book lens. The ability for these franchises to have this…Read more
A Bisexual Watches Cruising (1980)
So Criterion Channel has a very interesting series called Queersighted, which highlights LGBT+ movies and filmmakers throughout the history of movies. I do like this series because it really opens a door to both queer reality and societies perception of queer folx throughout time. And one of the movies in the most recent entries is…Read more
So close to good: I Am a Ghost review
Well… with great promise comes great disappoint when the story falls flat. This movie had me for about sixty percent of the runtime. The whole first half is a beautiful study in building suspense and developing character in a nearly dialogue-free sequence. It is definitely something I will be studying. There are subtle hints, and…Read more
A very interesting deep dive into spirit photography
I find this whole era fascinating. This video goes into some interesting detail on not only the reasons Spiritualism so fascinated people of the time, but also the grifters that took advantage of people by analyzing one in particular: the art of spirit photography.
I’m going through all the pieces I had in my portfolio, since the new WordPress seems to have broken things even worse than I thought.
I think I’m going to do a rewrite on all of these. I am going to do a series, going through and talking about what I like, what I don’t, and how I’m going to rewrite them to go back into my portfolio.
Deus ex Bullshit: Tragic characters don’t get happy endings
Okay, so I am back on the watch a bunch of movies and critically analyze them job and I am noticing what pearl-clutchers would call a Disturbing Trend. Over and over and over, I’m watching movies with a tragic narrative structure that flinch at the last second and try and give it a happy ending….Read more
